Volunteer at Nexus Recovery Center
Below are volunteer opportunities available to individuals and groups. Larger groups are ideal in assisting with maintenance needs (painting, repairs, maintain facility grounds). Individual volunteers are expected to complete volunteer application and pass all background checks.
Volunteers help DISD teachers in the Adolescent Classroom. Volunteers can spend from 1-3 hours assisting with individual tutoring and special projects.
Volunteers are needed to help the Women's Auxiliary of Nexus manage the clothes closet and storage cabin. Duties include sorting, folding/hanging clothing donations in the storage cabin and organizing/moving donations from the cabin to the clothes closet. A regular commitment of 2-4 hours per week is appreciated, hours are flexible Monday-Friday 9am-Spm.
Children's Holiday Parties
Each year, the Women's Auxiliary of Nexus hosts Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties for the children who are living at Nexus while their mothers are receiving residential treatment. Volunteers are needed to assist with party setup, preparation and assistance with the children. Refreshments and treats are served while the children and moms make crafts, hunt for Easter eggs, decorate cupcakes, take photos and enjoy the festivities. The parties are just as much fun for the volunteers as they are for the kids!
Client Massage Night
The first Tuesday of each month, the Women's Auxiliary provide chair massages to the women who are receiving residential treatment in the Adult Women's program. Back and hand massages are done in a therapeutic environment to help alleviate stress and anxiety clients often experience during their treatment. A monthly commitment of two hours, 7pm - 9pm, is required.
Nexus has two beautiful gardens. Volunteers can help in either the Serenity Garden or the Organic Garden with tending gardens by planting, pulling weeds and harvesting vegetables. Our clients would benefit from classes or ongoing instructions from enthusiasts looking to share their passion for gardening with our clients.
Mentors for Adolescent Program
Volunteers are needed to assist and facilitate monthly activities to help encourage communication skills, goal-setting objectives and success planning for a successful recovery from substance abuse. Activities have included art, exercise/yoga, journaling, healthy-living presentations and self-defense.
